Historic Town Centres
The Middle Ages are being revived in many cities in the Elbe-Elster-Land. They kept their traditions alive and that is why even today you can experience and enjoy the small-town life with a slightly middle age taste.
1000 years ago the city Doberlug was mentioned in a document for the first time. In the 12th century Doberlug became popular through its Cistercian monastery. It is the oldest monastery between the rivers Elbe and Oder.
Because Herzberg is in good geographic conditions, it became an important trade market in 1467. After monasteries and the big church were founded, Herzberg became the church center of the region around the river “Elster”.
It all started with a crossing, a castle surrounded by moats and two islands. On the one the old town, on the other island the restored and newer town. In between there were only ramparts and trenches.
The town centre of Uebigau is more than 750 years old but its urban structure still is preserved. Its big rectangular market place shows the important meaning of Uebigau in the trade of former times.
